So, apparently, this made 2nd!
Yipeee!
As much as I appreciate it -- and this is a major milestone for me -- I can't help feeling a strong sense of undeserving, or some form of impostor syndrome. I get the impression that this wasn't anyone's favorite. (Although there was no competing with #1!)
The fact is, the boss is way over-tuned. While I intended for it to be the big show-stopper -- more than the bait-and-switch intro and the freezing over of Hell -- the method of attack just wasn't clear, and the attack pattern was far too unforgiving, for what limited resources the player has at their disposal, to be anything more than a sour note on something otherwise pristine. For that, I apologize; truly.
The tricky thing is finding that balance when you're testing these things. I haven't anyone to judge these levels as I make them but myself, and as someone who values difficulty, this has led to similar failings. I made sure that on a technicality, there were enough energy pickups at the lead-up to just barely fill the necessary weapons, should the player run out, but obviously, no one would have it committed to memory on a first run. I debated on leaving the Yashichi, but I wanted to leave the player a sense of urgency with what they had -- where it instead brought frustration.
Technically, the whole fight is possible on a first go, so long as you have the reaction to see and evade the first punch as the bar fills. Technically, you are able to hit Guts Man on the final phase without damage, so long as you keep at the very edge of the center, but the margin for error is just too little for an initial playthrough--much less the odd Wily Tower.
I'm not entirely sure what to make of this: what I've typed. I suppose if anyone stops to read this, they'll understand some of the thought behind this, and after the fact. Thanks for reading -- and playing, if you did, and sorry if this comes across as little more than an excuse.
Please do better than this as a Maker! I urge you!! ٩(^ᗜ^ )و ´-
